Teacher Education

Teacher Education at Northern prepares students to become teachers who thrive in multicultural and multilingual settings. We provide theoretical foundations and practical applications that encourage students to think creatively and critically. The programs are designed to support and address the Yazzie/Martinez findings. All education coursework is delivered in an online format by certified faculty.

The Bachelor of Arts programs in Early Childhood Education (ECED) and Elementary Education (ELEM); and the Alternative Licensure Programs (ALP) in Elementary, Secondary and Special Education are accredited by the New Mexico Public Education Department (Spring 2022) and by the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) in (April 2024).

The Department is committed to preparing the highest quality teachers in partnership with New Mexico school districts and communities by celebrating the uniqueness of northern New Mexico’s multicultural, multilingual students, communities and pueblos.

The Department of Teacher Education at Northern is housed in the Richard C. Martinez, Teacher Education Center on the Española Campus. For general inquiries or applications, contact us at DTE@nnmc.edu or (505) 747-5431.
