ENGL 3318 - Oral Traditions: Folk Stories

(3 CR, 3T + 0L)

In order to develop an understanding of how oral traditions and folk stories shape the way people understand and interpret their experiences, you will explore folk stories from various cultures, with a special emphasis on Native American, Hispanic, and African American cultures. You will experience storytelling through guest speakers, class presentations, and films. Through class discussion and writing, you will develop critical responses and analysis of folktales, focusing on cultural patterns and perceptions. To help you better understand the role of folk stories in our community, you will participate in a service learning project that supports the preservation and celebration of folk stories and the oral tradition.

Prerequisite(s): ENGL 1120 .
Cross-Listed As: HUMN 3318.
